NEA/Columbia 1

Eyes popped open, alert and seeking, at about 5:45 am today. After a low-key introductory meeting and charming dinner (Alouette at 97th and Broadway), I passed out last night, television blaring, about quarter of ten.

The 22 fellows for this program come from 17 states and all manner of media: daily and weekly print, online, radio, etc etc. I've made instant friends with another young gent, BM from Chicago, who was accosted on the street by an affable homeless woman who swooned over his "Caribbean eyes."

It's true.

Today's agenda: classical music in the newsroom (Justin Davidson + Steve Smith), a conversation with Alex Ross (is that today? I can't recall) and other things about which I will write later when I'm more cogent.

New York City is feeling very comfortable.
